As Romania is our host country, we owe it to our students, some of whom are Romanian to make sure they learn the local history. The past month we have delved into Romanian history, covering prehistory in this part of the world, followed by the ancient Dacians, the Roman conquerors of Dacia, the early Middle Ages with so many migratory people passing through, the influence from foreign powers like Hungary, the Bulgars, the Ottomans, the Hapsburgs, the Russians … we also studied famous people like Vlad Tsepes, Stephen the Great, Michael the Brave, Ion Cuza who organised the modern unification of Romania, the 19th and 20th century leaders of Romania … using huge timelines and some costumes to act out some of the history via “living biographies” and interviews conducted by “time traveling journalists”.
